Matt came to Shiloh Academy as a day treatment student two months before his 17th birthday.

When he first arrived at Shiloh House, Matt was angry and resistant to help.  His plan was to drop out of school as soon as he turned 17, which he openly and frequently shared with Shiloh House staff.  He was convinced that no one could do anything to make him change his mind. The clinicians and teachers at Shiloh House challenged Matt to try and engage in academics until his birthday.  He agreed to make an effort, but was sure his decision would still be the same as soon as he turned 17.

During his time at Shiloh, Matt often displayed aggressive and defiant behaviors.  Matt’s team of staff worked to build trust with him as they encouraged, corrected, and affirmed positive choices he was making.  As time went on, he slowly opened up and developed relationships with his therapist and teacher.  Through these relationships, Matt experienced the care and support he needed and had never experienced before. Soon enough, his 17th birthday came and went, and Matt continued in his classes as if dropping out was no longer an option for him.

Today, Matt has transferred to a new public school and continues to engage in his school work successfully. He calls Shiloh House often to update his teachers and clinicians on his progress and how he well is doing. Recently, Matt informed Shiloh that he is on the wrestling team at his high school and is still working hard in his classes. Matt not only plans on completing his high school degree this year, but is also accepted to the University of Denver Class of 2022!
